Effects on Hair Growth
The increased efficacy of Dutasteride is felt to be due, in part, to its effects on lowering serum DHT.Dutasteride 0.5mg/day decreases serum DHT 91% and scalp DHT 54%. Finasteride 5mg/day decreases serum DHT 71% and scalp DHT 38%. Based on these results, dutasteride should be significantly more effective in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia than finasteride. However, since the Type I form of the 5 alpha-reductase that dutasteride blocks is not present in significant quantities in the hair follicle, these effects may not be as significant as one might expect.
How it works
There is a hormone in your blood called dihydrotestoterone (DHT), which causes your prostate to grow. Drugs like dutasteride prevent the formation of DHT in your body, causing an enlarged prostate to shrink.
How to use dutasteride
A. At 2.5mgs/day is roughly 1.5x more effective than Finasteride at 5mgs/day,
B, At treating hair loss (both halting it as well as regrowing it).
In addition, Dutasteride can be used successfully at that same dose to treat prostate enlargement
Do NOT use dutasteride if:
A. You are allergic to any ingredient in dutasteride or to another 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor (eg, finasteride)
B. The patient is a woman who is pregnant or may become pregnant
C. The patient is a child.
