Tibolone Description:

Tibolone (brand name Livial), also known as 7α-methylnoretynodrel, works by mimicking the activity of the female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. It also has some male hormone (androgen) effects. Tibolone helps to restore the balance of female hormones in women who have a lack of oestrogen; it helps to ease symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats.

Tibolone is used mainly for treatment of endometriosis, as well as hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal women. Tibolone is a synthetic steroid hormone drug, which is fairly non-selective in its binding profile, acting as an agonist mainly at estrogen receptors, with a preference for ER alpha. Tibolone has similar or greater efficacy compared to older hormone replacement drugs, but shares a similar side effect profile. It has also been investigated as a possible treatment for female sexual dysfunction.

Tibolone is also prescribed to help prevent osteoporosis (bone loss). It is only suitable for women who have been through the menopause, and providing there have been at least 12 months since the last natural period. It is prescribed when other, more preferred, treatments are not suitable.

Tibolone is suitable for women who have not experienced a natural period for at least 1 year. If taken sooner, irregular bleeding may be experienced.

Usually a woman using cyclical HT and experiencing a monthly bleed can start tibolone after the oestrogen/progesterone phase of her current HT.

Postmenopausal women not currently taking HT, or who have had a hysterectomy, may start at any time.
A woman taking HT that contains the same amount of oestrogen and progestogen every day of the month can change to Tibolone at any time.

Function:

Tibolon has estrogenic effects on bone and vaginal tissue. The Δ4-isomer functions as a progestogen in

endometrial tissue, whereas in the brain and liver it has androgenic effects.In breast tissue, Tibolon acts

by strongly inhibiting sulfate activity and weak inhibition of 17α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity,

which results in blocking the conversion of estrone sulfate to E2.

Tibolon Contraindications;Tibolon is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:,Women with

hormone treated tumors,Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding,Pregnancy/lactation,Liver and/or cardiac

disease,Tibolon Adverse Drug Effects,Depression,Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal

pain,Visual disturbances, Alteration in results of liver function tests,Excessive fluid retention in the body

tissues resulting in swelling (edema),weight changes, vaginal bleeding, pain in the muscles and joints,

rashes or itching,Seborrhoeic dermatitis,Headaches, dizziness, growth of facial hair.

Dosage:

1.Before you start taking the tablets, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside your

pack. The manufacturer's leaflet will give you more information about tibolone and a full list of the

side-effects which you may experience from taking it.

2.Take one 2.5 mg tablet every day. You may take at whatever time of day you find easiest to remember,

but try to take your doses at the same time of day, each day. You can take the tablets before or after

meals. You may find it helps to swallow the tablet with a drink of water.

3.If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless you are more than 12 hours late. If

you are more than 12 hours late, leave out the forgotten dose and take your next tablet at the usual time.

Do not take two tablets together to make up for a missed dose.

How do you take Tibolone

1. One tablet should be taken once a day, at the same time each day.
2. The tablet can be taken either with or without food. Swallow it with a drink.
3. If you forget to take your tablet at your usual time and it is less than 12 hours late, take it as soon as you remember. If it is more than 12 hours late, leave out the missed dose and take your next dose as usual when it is due. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
4. Missing a dose increases the risk of experiencing vaginal bleeding or spotting.
