Application
4-androstenedione is a common precursor of male and female sex hormones. Some 4-androstenedione is also secreted into the plasma and can be converted into testosterone and estrogen in peripheral tissues.
4-androstenedione can be synthesized in one of two ways. The main pathway involves the conversion of 17-hydroxypregnenolone to dehydroepiandrosterone by 17,20-lyase, followed by conversion of dehydroepiandrosterone to 4-male by enzyme 3-beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase Ene. The production of adrenal 4-androstenedione is controlled by ACTH, whereas the production of gonadotropin androstenedione is controlled by gonadotropin. In premenopausal women, the adrenal gland and ovaries each account for about one quarter of androstenedione (about 3 mg / day). After menopause, the production of 4-androstenedione is reduced by about half, mainly due to reduced ovarian secretion of steroids. However, 4-androstenedione is the major steroid produced by postmenopausal ovaries.
