Procaine hydrochloride, also known as Novocain. It is a local anesthetic that temporarily blocks the conduction of nerve fibers.
It has an anesthetic effect, strong action, low toxicity, no addiction, but weak penetration of skin and mucous membranes. Not suitable for topical anesthesia, patients for infiltration, spinal and conduction anesthesia.
Procaine is a local anesthetic. Procaine causes loss of sensation in the skin and mucous membranes (numbness). Procaine is used as an injection during surgery and other medical and dental procedures. Procaine can also be used for purposes other than those listed here.
Is procaine the same as lidocaine?
Prokamide and mepivacaine have been studied, but only procaine is currently approved for spinal anesthesia in the United States. Current research indicates that procaine produces spinal cord anesthesia with the same duration and sensory level as lidocaine, and suggests that it is less likely to cause TNS.

A commercial spinal solution of 10% procaine or high pressure 5% lidocaine was diluted 1:1 with CSF prior to injection.
For procedures expected to require 45-90 minutes, first add 20 mcg (0.4 ml) of fentanyl and then add CSF sufficient to reduce the final concentration to 2.5% lidocaine or 5% procaine.
The dose of lidocaine (40 or 50 mg) or procaine (60, 80 or 100 mg) is selected by an unblinded anesthesiologist who is undergoing spinal treatment to achieve approximately the desired level of sensation.
